IELTS Academic
For candidates preparing for university admission, scholarships and professional registration.
Who It's For
Is IELTS Academic Right for You?
IELTS Academic is generally designed for candidates applying to universities and other institutions of higher education, or professionals such as doctors and nurses seeking to register with a professional body that requires the Academic version.
Requirements vary between institutions and regulators, so always confirm which version of IELTS — Academic or General Training — is required for your specific application before you begin preparing.
The Four Components
Listening
Four sections of recordings, identical in format to General Training, covering academic and everyday contexts.
Reading
Three long passages drawn from academic texts, books, journals and newspapers, testing comprehension and inference.
Writing Task 1
Describing and summarising visual information — a graph, chart, table, or diagram — in your own words.
Writing Task 2
A formal essay responding to a point of view, argument or problem, with a clear structure and supported ideas.
Speaking
A three-part conversation covering familiar topics, a short individual talk, and a discussion on more abstract ideas — identical in format to General Training.
